I wanted to be sure that we've opened up the the not the panelist but the participant Channel and I see those numbers going up so I'm going to go ahead and get started I thank you so much for joining us this evening my name is Christina walk Top Ramen assistant superintendent for pupil and Community Services here in this money to buy School District we would like to welcome you to our webinar this evening in partnership with the Latino Roundtable we're going to get better and best information available on Community Schools as you know the district has I embarked on the grant through the county and working with the ladp organization we're thrilled to be part of this and to expand our horizons with communities what I'd like to do at this time is to first of all welcome our board members we have our board president here mr. Arturo Jimenez welcomes there thank you for being here we also have our board member with dr. Roberta Perlman thank you so much dr. Perlman for being here and would like to do it this time that I want to double-check either a mr. jiminez or dr. Perlman would you like to share a few remarks before we move forward you are the president so you should go yes thank you everyone for being here I know I don't know everyone I don't know everyone here and I want to thank everyone for coming although I know so you for close to over before I was married and I've been married for 25 years. So thank you so much for doing the work that you're doing this is a dream come true for a community in Pomona something that we've been talking about since I was a very young man but making schools not holes in the community like dark spots in the afternoon or evening but being a priest a priest of light even after school is over making sure that schools are exactly God a place where people can come and seek Community answers to community problems getting this is a remarkable I know for a fact and I'm going to get up I'm very excited about Eric Vasquez getting to the new brand about the meeting. Just have him clean his clothes but now he's talking about sea routes to school so that's incredible so there so we can have access to schools in Snapseed browsers we go to school so those are important part so thank you so much for the work you're doing we're making inroads and our community is but the better for it thank you so much thank you Google thank you so much Miss You dr. Pearlman I'll just take a moment and welcome dr. harkavy thank you so much for joining us tonight it's a really our honor to have you here and again as as Sarah said this is you know this is this is about the community it's about the the links between our our schools and our Community Partners particular including our universities and how the universities can assist us to you know to to get that that a plane going from high school to our to our colleges and universities and again it's it's Community work and it's it's we wanted we're doing this but we want to do it the best we can do it so so thank you for joining us and for sharing your wisdom thank you so much dr. Perlman and I'd like to introduce we all know I'm very well and appreciate all of the expertise and energy dr. Jose Calderon who is one of our taxes our professor emeritus at Pitzer College he was going to introduce our guest speaker dr. Ira harkavy so don't have to cover up dr. Harper I do want to introduce some of the leaders that are working in the college-for-all Coalition from the round table and who are on our board does Alina mean what is a recycler of directors and Latino and Latina Roundtable a HIDA Carranza who work with Pomona unified for many many years is a community organizer with a Latino Latino round table now Angeles in Plano vice president of the Latino Latino Roundtable Oscar Segovia who's a teacher at Chaffey High School and also board member and member of the Latino Roundtable education committee Mike Suarez his connecting in a board member and also part of the education committee David Estrada who we said is labor Council for Latin American advancement and also working with the board of the Latino Latino round table and I know. Grayson is going to join us he's the president of the NAACP and I want to thank you Doctor walks Harper and Pomona unified for the partnership that we have developed over the years and supporting Kyojin two bills that we've supported to the college for all of the implementation of high-school to college initiatives the collective supported the efforts of community schools and the involvement of our area colleges in these efforts and I see that they are superintendent of Pomona unified has joined us a welcome their nose and so glad that you're able to be here I don't know if you want to say a few words Darren I just want to say good evening and thank you doctor called her on I I was here on time but I was on the audience side of the room so I'm super excited about tonight we are you know we've been doing community schools for a while and we're always anxious and eager learn from from our partners and other folks that that have experience in partnering with the community so we're excited about being on the panel tonight I thank you so much and I see we already have about 60 people and that's not counting the those we can see here this is a webinar I wanted you to know when I want to take Pomona unified for handling the technological part of this is also being in but I wanted to let you know that it's out of our Partnerships and moving our efforts forward that we have come together this evening to listen to a nationally-known scholar on Community Schools and University assistant schools and I can't thank him enough for taking the time I know it's past nine over in Pennsylvania Dr Ira harkavy and in respect of time our time together on chat we will have his entire bio bus I will not go into it but I cuz we'd be here all night but I do want to highlight that he is the associate vice-president he is the founding director of the nutter center for Community Partnerships at the University of Pennsylvania since 1892 East chair of the international Consortium for higher education so all of this is also International and he's chair amaryllis of a coalition that I think we should join the Coalition for Community School in addition to developing models of academically based community service courses community-engaged research projects and University Community Partnerships and also University assisted contagious Community Schools dr. harkavy has co-authored and co-edited 13 books on the history and the current practice of Community School Partnerships and the Democratic and Civic mission of higher education in these Partnerships we are so appreciative of doctors Harvey heart of these humbleness and we got these messages from the UCLA Community School at Los Angeles Robert Kennedy campus and also the can you see a lady Community Schools when they heard about that we were having darker harkavy they said they are connecting and we welcome these community schools that are going to listen to this right now welcome and thank you for joining us but we thank him for taking the time to share his knowledge is experience and his practices on Division and implementation of community schools and University of Sisters Go please join me in welcoming Ira harkavy thank you Iris thank you very much thank you appreciate this very much and I'm honored to be here this evening and to be with you I thank you dr. Calderon for your interest and support and got the coronavirus and trying to get together for a very long time and this meeting provides a wonderful opportunity not only to meet wonderful colleague so I met but also to meet that because around so thank you very much for that let me begin with the with the first slide here on democracy Community Schools and universities assistant Community Schools and that's what this discussion is going to be about it's going to be about the central role to Community Schools in University Heights Assisted Community Schools in developing democracy in society and particularly now next slide please there's a problem I can see if I have it up and couldn't run the slide myself if that's would be preferable so let me just see if I can do that let's see if I had the money I made I'm not sure Jesse is his hearing yeah there we go absolute crisis that is increasingly increasingly severe inequalities across-the-board occurring in our society's there's also a rising increasing in racism anti-semitism islamophobia xenophobia all across the board this is an issue Not Just Knee knighted states but globally as we know very much in this country there have been attacks on science attacks of learning attacks of knowledge of self and declining first of all major institutions we Face the tremendous issues now that will affect the future of democracy in the future of our society is the United States and around the world next likeliest Slidell fight Hanscom signal the other way we could delete issue now is it there is an issue of the extent of this crisis is in fact links to the failure of many institutions and they found significant but the failure of universities do what they are designed to do is crucially important to understand the current situation that were in it is icy universities have two primary purposes and I'm quoting two individuals play rolls and University of Pennsylvania first and most important in my judgment is education for Democratic citizenship as I'm sure all of you know and if you don't know you'll know it now is it Benjamin Franklin found the University of Pennsylvania back when you visit University of Pennsylvania if you ever have I know dr. Calderon has her statues of Benjamin Franklin's all over one friend of mine who visited from Europe said they should call the school same Benjamin because of a stampede or at least all over like slime Factory in Franklin but he really was remarkable to the work you did and he emphasized when he formed and that the purpose of a higher education institution was developing young people and inclination which is moral join with Mobility intellectual to serve human beings once country friends and family and that ability to serve should be the great aim and end of all learning and that should be a primary Mission I don't think universities doing well enough and then that universities also is designed to continuously improve The Human Condition to continue his benefit betterment of human life and to quote someone else works at the University of Pennsylvania and doctor wrong with no this is a sociologist was w.e.b. Du Bois the boys who wrote the Philadelphia while in Philadelphia wild at 10 and he said in that book that the purpose of the book was to serve as a scientific basis of further study no practical reform not knowledge for its own sake but knowledge to improve the world and I'm arguing an effect that universities failure to do these things as well as they should and could is a primary color cause of the crisis we face not the only caused in terms of democracy next five please and right now I was just saying that I think there was three types of universities that it currently exists and those universities are traditional liberal arts university certainly do many valuable things but they also off also I've had in his own Fleet and  story and tayshia exclusionary is the pros to inclusive defining certain cultures historically for a berry long time I've been outside the Canon being outside of what was what was appropriate and then certainly want to say the 1990s there has been a rise of neoliberal entrepreneurial unit please let universities and colleges in which the purpose of knowledge is not virtue but profits increasingly the purpose of shooting students as customers not as contributors to knowledge increasingly the emphasis on academics Superstars and in fact rather than the community of Scholars and emphasis as if the sole purpose not that it's not an important person the soul purpose is economic success in which there is a distortion of the purposes of learning can I mix success and significant but so is citizenship and Civic development show his personal development so is intellectual but there is miniscule orientation which is in part a reason it has been arised or pushing Back In traditional liberal arts and trying to stop this this is occurred all over the world and how much that narrows students Vision with institutions functioning profit-making corporations rather than centers of advancing learning for the betterment of human life and what I would argue is needed now more than ever is to create Democratic Civic universities and Democratic University Civic universities with have as their primary Mission and I mean that as primary advancing democracy chronically advancing them mock receive democratically on campus and the community and across the wider Society the number one purpose needed more than ever and the local community engagement particularly I would argue to Community Schools and universities assisted Community Schools can be a primary means for creating the Democratic Civic University again with the primary being advancing democracy democratically on campus in the community and Elijah Society know one thing to note about this week is it before then going to the next slot slide needs to be a sense of is this appropriate for universities when I began doing this work many years ago there was a real do this work if you look at the history and I am in the store this is what I study important when you look at universities historically you see that when they were founded in the United States they were founded as Colonial colleges and every Colonial College except for the University of Pennsylvania alluded to a little touchy on the game we found it for the issue of service me to create schools that would educate religiously Orthodox man and ministers who is create Christian Commonwealth's for the benefit of the people in those two so Harvard with congregational is the oldest school in William and Mary was Anglican and yell with congregationalists Skip and Princeton was Presbyterian in Columbia Kings College was Anglican and Dartmouth with congregationalist and Rutgers was Dutch reformed in brown was Baptist plus some other mixer that largely brown but all of them had service to the court was religiously driven but it was knowledge to help create a better society and indeed University of Pennsylvania and Franklin took that and said knowledge not based on religion but Sekulow the first secular higher educational institutions recent in the world with the notion that knowledge again for the idea of developing an inclination moral join with no ability to serve others as the purpose and then we can jump I was just jumping to the land grant Institution you can go to land-grant institutions 1960 and the Morrill Act under President Lincoln and land grants which had recently difficulties and how it dealt with population really native populations but its purpose what is today's Advanced democracy include improve the quality of life in the expanding United States and in fact the most famous example of that was probably the Wisconsin idea with the idea of the University of Wisconsin with did the bow series of the University of the boundaries and state to improve the life of the farm and improve citizens lives I just became crucial to the development of universities and not just land grants for urban research University of the first urban research University probably in the United States Johns Hopkins in the 1876 and when it was going to be about you said it was to increase honesty and business to increase learning in school to it to end misery 2 m misery in the community and certainly none of the leading research universities including my own it done that Falcons hasn't done that in Baltimore pain has not done that in West Philadelphia in Philadelphia but to end misery among the poor and when it created was this ends of the urban research universities mission was to improve the quality of life of people in the communities of the city and University of Pennsylvania strangely enough at the Wharton School which was found it at that really is a school of administration the political and social and economic science every student Wharton senior class how to do a research paper on improving the quality of life in Philadelphia every student any producer of a booking I think what was found in 1882 so 1882 81 + 8 92 by Municipal governments that became a classic texting in the field so there was a tremendous sense of knowledge to improve the world and certainly the cases of logic Spanish-speaking institutions historically black colleges and universities Regional colleges in community colleges have that social purpose built in I should noted the social purpose that Weekly Arbonne research University became weekend and attenuated as a result of World War One and Two became a tremendous sense that knowledge was not to improve the quality of life but knowledge increasingly for its own sake like that happen cuz it was a disillusion with the water and go towards the horror of that Battlefield and the optimism that people had that knowledge could change the world for the better and it was a retreat there was a retreat and you saw some of the things you sing today a reactionary approaches attacking Progressive faculty so University is Wharton School they got rid of Scott nearing who is an activist Professor they got rid because he criticized the Wharton Elite of the elite to the city of Philadelphia and one of his students was the grandson of one of the Board of Trustees members who is one of the lead singer fired Scott nearing Weezer land among other instances to forming the American Association of University professors so there has been a tremendous loss of this idea of knowledge to improve the world in Adams and wonderful quote the great great settlement house worker activists said as early as the 1890s you say said when universities and colleges was born they were formed the colleges to advance religion but they weren't judge by how holy they were but they would judge by how many people they turned to God when universities and colleges turn to be secular they should have focused on knowledge for the alleviation of human suffering instead they focused on knowledge for its own sake a means is becoming an end and we have lost our way but the way was really lost and it's really 19 what team and on and then there has been a change and the change occurred with the development of the end of the world and the World War II and the eventual end of the Cold War at the end of the Cold War turn universities away from Global issues to focusing more on locality and again at this. We are engaged in a time when there is lots of issues of global major conflicts but there's still that Central issue this began to develop again the Civic idea in the early 1990s and 1980s Knicks live please so what are we doing and when is this word connect now to on the ground in Community Schools so it's relatively easy to provide a history ZZ because the history why but what is happening today is a crucial question where the University of Pennsylvania is in the community of West Philadelphia West Philadelphia isn't Community facing a great deal of distress and pressures first of all Philadelphia is of the 10 largest cities in the United States the poorest of us 10 cities if you look at issues of poverty of young people of children 5217 in Philadelphia has an average she's incredibly High none the less of about 33% in the communities where we work in West Philadelphia it ranges from the community's mixed about 24% but the other 3 zip codes that we work in range from 37 to 44 per cent of young people in poverty that's completely unacceptable of the three major high schools we working in 99 to 100% of the students if qualify for free and reduced lunch in 2019 the unemployment in West Philadelphia was 21.2% and Philadelphia it was 12.5% so with you look at issues including fil-A what is infant mortality rates with a 40% higher than the national rate something needs to get done and University of Pennsylvania is an enormously wealthy and Powerful institution in the midst I'm facing these kind of poverty let me situation it is this certainly at least three rationales why the university needs to be engaged in it at least three one of those rationale is universities and their cities and communities are intertwined extent the college has the surround lowering part of the Pomona area going to be affected by that Community is enormous and extent of how those colleges function effect Ramona is a city second reason is is it universities and colleges could do a great deal to make a difference they are lost in the largest employers in a given area something Jose and I discuss and I've heard from calling and just not answering Susan's office the largest employer off in the largest computers of goods and services cultural centers centers of Technology they are incredibly significant institution in the communities in which they are apart and make a used I have something else is more important extraordinaire Lee bright creative intelligent actively oriented students faculty and staff that you win resources crucial and the third point which is perhaps most important isn't just good for the community it is crucial for the universities physician heal thyself universities need communities they need communities to do that teaching to do the research better it is a mutually beneficial relationship that is absolutely crucial if we're going to produce the changes that are needed we need in fact partnership with my colleague Nancy cancer Chancellor of Rutgers university-newark writes about we need a community of experts and that's one thing that didn't exist at the turn of the twentieth century when Auburn University began to work with that communities it was an Alicia story station it was helping those in need of help but that's changed any issue is what's needed to see this as mutually transformative in order to do better research teaching service and learning and have a better quality of life in the community on campus and what better learning pre-k through 20 + they said the University's work with that communities in Democratic Partnerships is the extent that they will be better for fill and realize their mission and really do it Franklin is w.e.b. Du Bois called on to educate students for Democratic citizenship and to develop knowledge for the continuous benefit to The Human Condition and less exist you will not see those kind of changes we each other so what is Natalie trying to do first of all I should probably Explain how and what better is before explaining what we're trying to do and the first thing she noticed we are a sinner that existed since 1992 it's hard to believe what we've existed over 30 years are we attempt to develop and Implement Democratic mutually transformative play Space Partnerships between Penn and West Philadelphia and the idea is precisely that Democratic that we work together play Space at Mutual change the idea is indeed to Advanced research to Advanced teaching to Advanced learning practice and service and to improve the quality of life and learning on campus in the community that really is the core idea in the way we in fact the 10 to make a difference is through three approaches Michelle described in Greater detail academically base community service or a BCS University assisted Community Schools or a BCS in New Mexico part of Motown. 2 strategies to engage the entire University to develop Democratic anchor institution approach let me make something very clear hand is not yet a doing what I believe is a comprehensive Democratic anchor institutions to do but that's part of these struggle that were involved with importantly these strategies the shared nachos to really serving as a model as much as to learn with others to my visiting with you this evening is part of my education this is how I stopped no institution could do this alone we need each other John Dewey wrote in 1927 in a book called the public and its problems he said the most important problem the most important problem with your return to later it's a neighborly communities Democratic neighborly communities and he said we don't have those communities in 1927 he said that we don't have them cuz it's such a hard problem there an intellectual problem is a heart problem not just Bruce Lee United States not just in Pomona and Philadelphia but also in Johannesburg also in London also in Mexico also in any City you can name Democratic neighborhood communities are very difficult to develop to work together to doing some of the things that are occurring among these various groups here which is so impressive that Latino and Latina Roundtable the Nae Nae really Unified School District all these Partners to Union that's what the work is about and it's very hard and you know what we need each other to figure it out we need to build a movement we need to learn to go we need to be part of I sensed it of sharing and that's why we do the work we do and why my visiting you is it I am honored to be asked and I will be honored by how much I learned from you cuz I learned so much next time please academically based community service and then provide examples of some courses that we we in fact work with and how they work the first issue of service-learning with a little difference it is a form of it but has certain emphases so I want to see different and it's a great service teaching and research and learning so is he integrative means of doing this importantly it's the idea that our institutions of higher education where should not be just designed to help students learn that's crucial that my students learn reflecting me better citizens button some level if we're not doing something to help change the community is the community want to be changed at once to be that we are being somewhat exploited to the needs to be a sense that we are contributing to solving problems and problems with trying to stop return them as universal problems what does that mean poverty who is schooling and adequate Healthcare a rolling environment Universal problems that are manifested locally these are my problems and just Billy problems not to Troy problems Nakamoto problems with the reversal is I just said and we are Matt and manifested locally in our goal is to work with the community to help help contribute to not do it alone we never could to contribute to a collaborative solution to those problems the work is designed as I've said a few times to improve the quality of life and learning in the community and the quality of learning is scholarship in the university in the quality of learning Pre-K from 20 plus it also helps all of our students is important and I believe this really is the most important mission of higher education even more important than contributing knowledge to The Continuous betterment of The Human Condition but the most important is the Democratic Mission helping students come active creative contributing citizens of a Democratic Society and I will fill it is in his house of these credit-bearing courses Center of how we engage academic work and you can see if you look over the years 30 years I think we made a lot of problems 32 years ago I'm still a way to go we started with Ford we had a hundred students we have about eighty four courses in 1900 but we should be keep going to 10,000 students of pain not by requirement by culture I think every student should be doing this and what a difference that would make next line please show me give a few examples from the next side of work that we do and how we we we approach that work and these three courses and I'll just describe them a bit the first one is for school every day during a science and this is a simple idea that occurs in many of our courses this is a question psychologist Robinson High School teachers at Paul Robeson High School named after the great activist singer athlete lawyer adjust actor Paul Robeson and who has lived in West Philadelphia Denver's life those clothes everyday Neuroscience works with high school students and has college students coming and learning effect Neuroscience by teaching it they come into the classroom and they teach girls size working in teams with the high school they work together to melt lesson plans they were together about things that the best way they might learn it and the students we found to teach this class has that is knee pain students Taylor Neuroscience better than going to be to provide for the ropes and students an opportunity to learn something they wouldn't learn and also I'm out playing an active role in shaping the curriculum then I just passively listening band Factory guys an active hands on side given the nature of American society and then again fishes inequalities it exist these students would not have this opportunity how is it explained rationally the given what pens actual wealth how it couldn't be better shared and developed through something like this you know we seen here we seen in this class that and that these students who've done this work and he's effectively science program at the high school and 10 the normal stuff packed on the learning of young people is the predictive index in Philadelphia do they predict how each school is going to do with the start of the academic year before years in a row Thompson High School students have had the highest Robeson High School the greatest performance above their predictive index than any High School in the city and the principle that high school and a head of state credits the work of our partnership no way our partnership a working together on issues like everyday normal size is 1 of 13 family-based community service courses in a relatively small High School I would be in somebody's not being fully honest if I didn't know if they had the best among the best principals in the United States Richard Gordon 1 Princeton of the year and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania he won principal of the year of black principal of the year and he won the national principal of the year so we were both Beyond blessed to have principal Gordon with us but he he personally and still is engaged been elevated to assistant superintendent that may be good for him and maybe good for the cause overall we miss him even though we have a great new principal but he was one of the reasons but what he will say it's that partnership that made a difference in those 13 courses and what difference did it make to pain I can have my students work at Robeson they were in college access they learn more from working with those wonderful people in Robeson High School and do better research papers than they ever would do if they didn't work at that high school so what does it do for the classes at Penn our students in our research improved do you read any of the work I do I was inside those experiences as a historian putting in context where the work has meaning but my students which is most important that's what occurs with them August Wilson & Beyond what is my great great great playwright the studies of Pittsburgh we have a professor in the English Department and Africana studies Herman beavers and Herman beavers takes the work of August Wilson in Pittsburgh but moves it to West Delphia adults and high school students in that Community to plays on their experience in West Philadelphia what they have lived what they have done and do plays and they act and present those plays and you see adults acting and writing and there's pictures of of that one of the right and you see young people doing the same thing creating a bond across the community and you see 10 students learning and appreciating the coaches of the community but also making contributions in their own writing that course is now going into its 11th year and it also works for the place is very Central to while we're cool Polo robes in Houston Museum which happened to chair that organ is which is again one of the last blast residents of Paul Robeson to a brings in a cultural institution in the neighborhood and has had tremendous impact on the work of those young people working out of Serra High School and then also course in landscape architecture Studio Plus that's his high school that has an area of the school has Butte Gardens with the areas of plastic Gordon Ramsay and his students identify the idea of creating a breathing room at Sayre High School outside which would improve the outdoor spot and we'll Wellness space and that Wellness space has been developed is developing collaboratively by Penn students in architecture and and the Weitzman School of Design and Pain Center for Public Health initiatives Public Health students on the graduates Landscape Architects and satyr students changing that space into a place of rather than concrete a place that serves as a place for unwinding waxing and working in the community is an example of three of those next cycling next thing I want to talk about is University assisted Community Schools but they get there I have to talk about the roots of this work and just two significant and a significant is any of this is the idea that we're all working together Community Schools and parts right start with this work with Jane Adams the other with different developments and Adams a great activist family settlement house worker in Chicago in the late 19th century she and her colleagues around the country to you and Lillian Wald in the Lower East Side in New York City they've developed the idea that although settlements which is providing service to Immigrant and pool communities were isolated more spread out schools were everywhere Services into the school and we got to work with parents and adults in the school building John Dewey was enormously influenced by Jane Addams some people doing that and it is great to work after you left Chicago and that was probably because he wasn't hanging out with Jane Adams 10 on the Grassroots democracy understand the necessity of working together what do we do wedding dress in 1902 when she said the school needs to be a social Center and needs to be a center of the neighborhood and needs to be a place of democracy it needs to out reach out to the community and being sources and it needs to have ongoing now Clippers continuing education ongoing education it needed to be the hub for creating a democratic neighborly community we never stuck with that idea that's a whole other discussion to academic and certain ways nothing tonight but in general I finally presenting it so I think I would just put it in this way that it's Dewey never stuck with that idea he always stuck with the idea of democracy but jump from situation to situation different plans but this was to me his most brilliant practical develop taking Adam's idea William walls idea the school at Center of neighborhood in 1902 and then his student Elsie clap developed rural community schools in arthurdale West Virginia and here students did something preschool did did not write about he did not write about this in his work the School of Social Center which she did is something he should have connected Community Schools aren't just about neighborhood at Central Schools daily community and democracy there also should be about young people learning to active engagement in the Community Learning the way do we wrote learning by trying to solve problems thinking you said a car is in a Ford Roadster Malaysian when is a problem to solve it even do that Elsie Clapton that in Virginia West Virginia the curriculum could help be part of changing the but you could use the community I have the community be the text that people learn from that the community is a site of learning that it is the neighborhood and communities experience it says students can and should learn from and she tried that in 1934 the 36th and then letting Cabello and Harlem East Harlem in New York developed the community school to confirm that he developed the school as the neighborhood center and changing the community a building houses of building coalitions among students and community members to change housing to improve the quality of life than anybody to approve sanitation to make this school and evening hugs to the entire neighborhood but he never connected the curriculum in the ways of Clapton and Frank manly and Mott developed the idea of the lighted Schoolhouse the extended day school and the Coalition for Community Schools who was the founding chair of 2012 from 1997 developed the idea of not bringing these ideas together School community school as a place Community Schools as a based on partnership Community Schools based on students learning through active engagement in their communities and by bringing services and activities and being involved in extended program that's a rough history certainly there are aspects of the Rosenwald schools and so on as being crucial with your involved students in the South African American students in special small community school they're also part of this history side please go to the Google so this is the definition and I would provide for Community Schools and I'm not saying this is my calling tonight provide community members and I provide the teachers the students it is not one that I see others to think about or necessarily do there's a lot of debates now about what community schools are near four principles of pillars that people talk about and in my own riding with other colleagues Who quote pioneers of this Movement we talked about family supports and active family community engagement and community-based learning and collaborative leadership and expanded learning opportunities are all important but it's hard I think Community Schools are about democracy at their heart I see them as comprehensive neighborhood centers that Democratic Partnerships what I saw today before this meeting started and became introduced to the college for all coalition that's what community schools are about democratic Partnerships people working together the school serving as a center of the neighborhood isn't democracy building institution that's through its work with the students as core Partners it contributes to improve Student Learning and Development but also to increase Community well-being many years ago there was an article I read in the Philadelphia Inquirer article I wrote in 1999 When teacher of the year and she was from the community of North Philadelphia and he did remarkable thing but she said directly unless we change the conditions in the community unless the school is part of that the change will not occur for all young people in long-term do we have to see the school as a catalytic entity for Change and that's what this definition is designed as a comprehensive neighborhood center that is built on Democratic partnership is it contributes to Brewster and develop and simultaneously increased Community wellbeing next line please CID of University assistant Community Schools, smack history of Community Schools but it does a few things the first thing is to do we recognize this Community Schools require something that is different from other schools they need more resources you know that from governmental funding but we also know what did they need partnership resources can't do it alone you can't burden teachers with this word teachers have a job it is so intense Central important they need supports that can carry all those functions alone you need leadership of the district willing to have Partnerships but that's what bills that you need to bring people in you need to bring people in as part of the educational and learning team who are unique aspects that are important to Student Learning and Development so universities we see is a lead partner not the only partner and providing broadly-based the same support and universities make them Partnerships to connect them universities and the school's correctly do a common focus on helping helping not solving it alone helping helping to solve local community identify problems Reno Stead education how to improve so we were asked to work on that it was told that they needed to be changed in the way sad high schools physical grounds were the academic Partnerships helping people from zero listen to school from pre-k through 20 + and helping the entire population in that kind of activity as designed to simultaneously as I just said improve Community well-being and research teaching and learning case 18 + + + + and this is what we try to bring together we are seven University assistant Community Schools battling 3,400 students and families Pre-K okay from 12-18 and undergraduate and graduate they're not all the students we work with the work in these academically base community service places the vast majority was Philadelphia the school's not all them we go somewhere with communities of faith and community-based organizations and about 400 work-study an insurance in over 300 regular volunteers so we work with about over 2,500 to 3000 students and faculty working with the community of 3400 students aggregation you can't stall the problem of Education by focusing on just the school's alone you can solve the problems of Social Service by Socastee Social Service issues along you have to bring it weather in place in a place where students live human beings experience life in a place and academics create very good programs that are separate and fragmented they're not good programs become good programs in practice by being in place and working with communities where they can have an effect on how young people and their families and their Community actually members actually speak is thing so we bringing them together and that's our attempt to do that here next line please so these are an example of the University assistant community school programs that we have a variety of them didn't exist the largest of them is in fact on nutrition and health and that's the first program that I just was listed here but anti-violence and coaches a piece Philadelphia is right with you silence now and violence affecting you as much as she is so we've been with Community emphasis focusing deeply on creating safe spaces to the students in the schools I have antibiotic use driven programs that anti-violence and functions of Peace awesome culture career access which is the course that I'm involved with that I mentioned the science courses that I mentioned in pain reading initiative which uses if you do local culture and history and experiences and Hip-hop music and Rhythm to infect teach people how to do better in Reading at a very big effect for 3rd and 5th graders since the 1990s social and emotional mental health programs is it is another a cyst Sports and Fitness evening programs and young Quakers which is an athletic program was varsity teams work with students in are issue of a cross in basketball wins in women's basketball men's and women's lacrosse in track and field men's and women develop teams in the school's work together the high school soon the mentor by the college students and they work together showing results both of the college students and for the undergraduate and for the students in the high school until a tremendous impact let me provide one example of this before turning elsewhere to give a sense of how this works on the ground so you've heard some of that I'll take another School Hamilton school which is a K through 8 school and Hamilton School one of the teachers there showed up film on the Gangsta God the students looked at that film about using nutrition and improving a neighborhood and I looked at the school yard in their neighborhood in the school rather a nice or concrete flooding cool water drainage no trees no bushes and said we want to make that a project with the teachers teachers and the students went to the principal principal thought it was a great idea and I started working on creating an edible gold I also brought in their four classes in public health they also decided to work on nutrition and improving nutrition and developed or developing smoothies and growing fruits and vegetables they developed a guard fruits and vegetables that kids then began to sell using these with a cold I think that nutrition bucks or something like that or or I guess in Arbonne nutrition box I forgot the term in fact with students with work and then working on the project would be able to get smoothies that they made after school they developed in fact heat sensors to deal with the amount of heat difficulty so it could be measured they develop programs related to growing trees and bushes and making this a curricular focus of the Hamilton school so students in math classes employee real-world data to make watering plans based on predicted monthly rainfall Libra faculty and students and volunteers from nursing Arts and Sciences education academically base community service courses we brought in people from planning and design we brought them together creating real interdisciplinary work and Partnership of that community of expert idea and it really had a profound impact on not only pain but on the school in fact in 2020 they gave an award for the EPA for campus rain work Challenge and the design developed from the Hamilton Garden Project won first prize the one of the first prizes in that exists in that Pro it will has been extraordinary and we had visits at the school and see how it ramifies throughout the school in the neighborhood so that's an example of how you act work in practice next slide please well in fact as I before I go to the next line I want to make like a make this point play here and I'll throw some make it about the school's I just described it would be an overstatement to say that any of the schools just described all the kinds of schools they should and could be as much progress as we made it is insufficient it is insufficient is not the northern that are centered on what it could and should do take it to have these schools with these extraordinary really wonderful and bright young people and teachers function in ways they could and should the resource different parental is horrific in Pennsylvania Pennsylvania just had a lawsuit in which lead the is now in fact trying to develop a new plant do I provide more resources because those who have debt and those who need it most get least at least the purse in the schools in Philadelphia don't have the resources nor Social Capital necessary and universities need to do infinitely more than we're doing particular institution such as pain which I'm proud as made great strides but we miles and miles and miles and miles and miles and miles and miles and miles and miles and miles to go before we sleep everyday that drives me everyday that drives the Extraordinary Measures never has 50 staff members most of our money comes from government funding we also get money from pain we get money from generous donors and small amount from Grants from impound ations most of you programs with different we run programs with the school in the community after school program nutrition programs programs summer programs one of the largest providers of these type of programs in the whole city we believe the implementation is key we have 50 full-time staff and 125 part-time staff almost all from West Philadelphia almost all I think of all may even be from West Philadelphia so we're trying to build this but we need to do a lot more sample example of academic community service in University City Community Schools being part of a broader more extensive engagement of this change that really what you need to do is have these institutions and I made emphasized his first term function as Democratic anchor institutions anchors and communities have been there forever the demonstrations against pain treatment. what is Philadelphia Community it was an anchor and I believe building fences make good neighbors using Robert Frost again and it created a cordon sanitaire imaginal line it separated itself from the neighbor it moved out African-American residents in neighborhoods right next to the University of Pennsylvania I'm headed to come a long way since then but not significantly it was an anchor anchor Democratic means raising the range of University resources academic intellectual institutional and integrating it and working with the universe Community working that phrase democratically with the community and community of experts bring ABC at 2nd Avenue basically service and University City Community School as part of a larger strategy and we do work with the vice president's office University on these issues developing job training programs if we just need to graduate high school and is not does not have a job as one of the medicines are high schools that's not all high schools ones we work with does not have a job or is that going on to college can get wrapping employment at Schmidt and get work with full benefits of bail set so we have to grow that we're doing that with other parts of Campus we have a problem called pipeline or about 100 students a year learn their curriculum from a high school starting in 9th grade and neurology is a neurology Cardiology veterinary medicine and GI and they learn their curriculum by working with the medical center and they can use this to get careers or go on to college and you know please need to do that they need to see themselves as educational and employment centers or and with the community particularly for young people so that's the kind of work we do we try to do and bringing it all together not just against of the communities benefit not just for the school's benefit not just for the students but for universities to fulfill their charge. What do you teach students if you're not engaged in communities that face significant Vantage what's the lesson Atif Aslam what's the lesson to teach them silly isn't the lesson that you want to teach them the lesson that they need to learn blotchy Ahmadi who's the president of brown it went to the head of the national in the Major League Baseball the father of the actor who passed away a long time ago part to your body when he was president of brownies a spot of the actor Paul Giamatti the universities teach fall fall fall fall fall mobile I do them by what they say what we have to do is become Democratic anchor institutions if we want them kind of Citizen next size please Lakeside Inn at I'll be finishing up right about a few no it's like before that I think yes okay slide right note keep going one after this perfect note. Perfect okay so this is the idea I spoke about earlier. They need to learn and work with others did you need to develop at different levels learning communities sharing communities to that idea how difficult this work is in Philadelphia in 1980 7 I began before the medicine from doing this work in pain anyway with a group of other colleagues probably because universities were in competition and when we needed to bring them together we created the Philadelphia higher education network-enabled developments just 25 Institute working on issues of Community Schools University of Houston Community School neighborhood Partnerships College access 25 high res locally with the staff member at been worse than better but she doesn't work this works for us but you really runs a large Coalition throughout the city and to my former student which is lovely and then one of the important things we do we should I think let me hear in part is the national allocation of artwork of University system play school no many years ago we were receiving money from different sources Wallace funds and and the mosque foundation and the corporation National community service and then to help Advance his work and it was great interest and the people who named our Center than that her is they in fact we're interested in building the movement and they said let's have funding to create Regional centers and that's what we've been what you need to do when you can see the schools listed Universe runs all the Tulsa i u p y UConn UCLA right near you it says remarkable remarkable work at the Mann school in the RAF preschool remarkable as those eyes is IUPUI the other night and we learn from them all the time that practice is our source of learning this I hope all practices as well as all driving sharing and recently read about that six site which is the north of group of Institutions throughout North Carolina Duke private North Carolina Central HBCU and East Carolina University public working together to create a network Statewide in advancing this work and I just received 50 million dollars to advance this work we do all of these sites work with their natural schools and communities they serve the word the other reason was centers so they ain't no wrong they ain't no wrong we're all wrong we're all learning together we're all centers but not the one sent to we all do this and then National University of sisters beauty school network which has about 70 and new institutions joining on monthly calls and zoos and then we also try to make this a we don't make it where we part of a global movement this work in all of their organization so first nationally again the role I played in the Coalition for Community Schools with all the wonderful colleagues and we just wrote a book together I'm calling the Community Schools Revolution Marty blank who is the first director of the coalition Jane Quinn who is the leader of the children's a model the national Center for Community Schools as New York and Lisa varriale out of California was also the second chair after I was in the wonderful leader in this work in the found SeaWorld in broadly helping to be among the people to fall and develop this organization in 2009 I was asked to chair test for secretary Ray Donovan Raymond Donovan who is Secretary of Hud hit legs when I report any reports done the group of colleagues came together and talked about what we talked about today the role of anchor institutions and it was such a powerful support that we created a National Organization out Global with 1,000 holy anchor institutions task force designs do similar things the idea that to develop Democratic anchor Partnerships with the idea of four values democracy and Democratic practiced equity and social justice play space and usually transformative and finally the international Consortium for higher education civic responsibility in democracy which was formed in 1999 when we brought together USI registration groups with the Council of Europe 50 some European countries and brought in Australia South Africa eventually Ireland and and United Kingdom and fullness linkage around this issue advancing democracy on campus and in the community and how universities can do that and then formed in 2021 a global cooperation for Democratic mission of higher education because the Council of Europe and in today Consortium was joined by the organization of American states and by the owner of the International Association of University which brought in 35 countries coas and also brought hundreds of universe sing on that title the global cooperation for the Democratic mission of higher education on campus in the community and The Wider Society and now my last slide please it's always thumb up this work if I could what I've been talkin about the last 43 minutes or so and that really is building on the work extending the work of John do we do is I said 19:27 said democracy must begin at home and his home is in the abele community democracy must be getting home it must be Loco democracy is about voting if God is is important to people vote and now and engaged with insufficient don't do he said democracy is a way of life it's means to be throughout all institutions you also emphasize that the most important Audubon Society was a schooling system it more important than any other system was the role of schooling and shaping a society know you never said this but I kind of say the way I would say it no damage schooling no Democratic Society schooling is the most important subsystem of the society and Democratic schooling is crucial a sociologist out of Chile Carino jr. Arena green tea you said if you want to know what kind of school you want need and want to know what kind of school you need to tell me first what time is the sun do you want he wanted democracy you need Democratic schooling democracy must be at home his home is the neighborly Democratic Civic University and its local community and school Partners working together to create and sustain University assistant beauty schools thank you very very much I appreciate it thank you thank you so much dr. harkavy What a Wonder presentation thank you for staying awake long enough to share your gifts with us here experience across the country and then references from around the globe we we truly appreciate the opportunity to participate with you in this venture I wanted to share that I don't have many questions in the chat actually and so another kudos to you sir because that means that you've answered all the questions I think that many of our panelists may have share those quickly with you but I also want to add our translation through Zoom for some reason has been inconsistent what we will do as a district we will get the slides as well as the transcript though sale points are translated into Spanish and will post those on our website so I do want to apologize sometimes technology is less than friendly and we had that experience this evening in the team was working throughout the presentation to I make that more amenable to our needs but again we will translate the slides and then also the Salient points on the transcript to make that available to our community so again thank you I doubt if I could be the question I have currently is it's more of a general pigs and I think you addressed it rather well but I want to make sure if there's anything else that you would like to add is how do we improve the quality of life in our communities under General umbrella I have linked to the purpose of community school so the overall purpose of Community Schools as you see it and how that relates to improving the quality of life in our communities and certainly something that I have some ideas about but really do want to learn from you and others about how to do this so one issue of how this gets done is by having young people learn through collaborative problem-solving I'm working issues up a problem that they believe exists in their parents and Community believes it's taking the community as text and test with people learn by engagement and helping to improve the world so young people being served its young people serving others and learning through the process of trying to make a difference it was a great great great social psychologists Curlew Curlew and who wrote said if you really want to understand things just try to change it so having communities in school leadership and students and teachers identify what are the issues that's why we do some of the projects we do and then it said something to do certain things when I go to provide but we work to provide it together and the students helped to find that the students we have high school students teach younger students about nutrition they develop School Gardens and sell fruits and vegetables engage in attempts to in fact as I said work on them they have issues of employment so we try to create jobs are involved in these driven issues related to decreasing violence these are always ways of changing the community the idea is it Community issues and concerns become engines for Learning and the school becomes a catalyst for bringing about change and it's not so well though it is crucial but it does it also by being Partners into work together to change the provision of healthcare which we've tried to do to provide Health Services to provide Human Services we have a major emphasis on providing psychological support so young people face in the environment again with a very high degree of violence where they so many young people experience and no friends who experienced violence developing activities and program in terms of Outreach to the community but in their own schools and environment where they can be involved in those activities to having programs that make the school a center for people to come to and to be involved in classes and adult education so there are multiple approaches and part of it also as a catalyst for change is something people in the University have to do is bring the university resources to Bear where our students and our community contribute to that Community change schools cannot do this alone so I don't have a roadmap I've only been doing this for over 30 years but I'm learning and I think learning from different places we can figure out together how to move it but added it's the students through the collaborative problem-solving on community identify problems with partners and developing more resources more opportunities and trying to create environments in those schools in communities that is is engines of chain engines of learning through chains and places that bring more resources together to improve the quality of life including employment and economic resources thank you for that dr. Huckabee this other question has to do anchor institutions and authenticity so the question is whether some of the public universities which are being described here as cloaking themselves in liberalism in octopus whether they should be considered as anchor institutions when there's at least the the sense the the understanding that they are less as what they appear to be and being called an anchor institution that's a great question so I'm going to Broad and I think it's true of private institutions to know pain has been considered a leader in this work so and yet what percentage of pens resources is dedicated to producing the change that's needed the really could benefit the institution in their Community I'm a red and blue gum pain through and through I went there is none the garage was true I live demonstrations by the university treated people but I went on to graduate school I got my Ph.D a teacher or Professor or researcher administrator my children went to pain I whip my I met my wife in pain I mean I'm deeply loyal to pain and then I looked at other institutions Rutgers University Records Newark when my colleague was president of of of why they're no longer a colleague was not present View University of San Diego but they were much poor institutions Augsburg College in Minneapolis-Saint Paul I'm much more anchor Centric where they really are democratic anchors is kind of democratic anchor shorts done a number of things to look at the conditions of the community the inequalities through the years we've worked together has only increased true there's been improvements that we have stayed in the show at what is the relative deprivation to claim the phrases that the relative difference is in fact increased given spends enormous wealth we are not functioning as we couldn't shoot his Democratic anchors So Raven criticize my colleagues in public universities I'm sure that's true that too it's even true at home and a struggle is to change that and to set the friend and sometimes that's the thing that bothers me a great deal that we just haven't really turned that around so there's almost also in the United States has been a democratic Civic that has been the development of something like a movement of Democratic Civic engagement of university of Lafayette creating Democratic Civic University and again in the same way that movement has increased like this but there's also been that neoliberal entrepreneurial University and it's how much more powerful just overshadows working institutions and one thing we need to do is through this work this is to turn you River Cities to what they shouldn't could do for the benefit of assisted living communities in that society and themselves so I'm not just the state institution but research universities have not walk the walk that they need to walk and have not gone as far as they need to go to be called Democratic anchor institutions thank you for that I see a Michigan medicine if you have do you have you're muted stir I think your music. there's questions I have both of them thank you thank you so much because her heart of each for this really good presentation say it taking back to one thing that we have is that we have good mentors in Pomona who threw who have given us an opportunity to be to give who have given us age to create the change cuz they've been there with us for all these years helping us I mean talk about neurosciences inside Dollar General dr. Pearlman is getting my psychology prison psychologist many times when I'm about to walk up the edge in terms of in a community issues and remember I guess you had it with me when we have these  credit but how do we have in Pomona I think the same thing that you might have in Philadelphia that your permanent we have oh my gosh we had so many great resources from universities one of them we have so many things but honey come on at one time we had like a study that came through from Seattle Center Pomona was so disorganized. That was the biggest problem and so how do you how do you make how does a community school then program helped with the disorganization in the great question thank you mr. men as I think that really is terrific question and I would put it in the following late that's what community schools are about to bring those real closest together in place place matters I'm not saying we saw this but the idea that it isn't just multiple sites which of course can exist with the school being both referring people but also bringing Reese you know soon as a people partner and work together that project I talked about in Hamilton school we brought in the Philadelphia Orchard project the school district of Philadelphia various City departments to work at the cool site so it is not just the Community Schools aren't just a people say it's a strategy is based focus and is trying to bring people around common Geographic focus with a need to share those resources to make a difference I'm not saying it's the only solution but it also has the idea of reaching out to bring resources in but bringing those resources into the site in the community what are the causes of fragmentation remember reading this book ages ago called the social geography of the City by George Elaine and he wrote years ago I probably read this book and he said one of the great problems communities face I produced by the disciplinary organization and universities and which they are in fact focused on creating fragmentation with each discipline does its own thing that we have to bring them together and the Community Schools could do that I remember even around. Even before that read a book by the organization of economic cooperation development I just talked about this actually with someone but in Europe and meeting we had and I remember the book was called the university the city the only station of economically operation development and I think it's a graph said something like the following communities have universities have departments in schools so they have to bring together around those real issues in human beings if knowledge doesn't improve Things become self-referential on the way to do that is the right miss that man is bring them together but bring it together I think it's a school site in the community school that answer your question of it thank you and dr. Huckabee how do respectful of your time I know we've just hit 11 on the East Coast we do have some additional questions in the queue and I'm wondering if it's possible for us to email those to you if yeah if that would be most appropriate I just wanna be respectful of your time sir happy I got a lot of energy and whatever it is okay with you you know I'm going to go turn on the TV I'll see what basketball scores are on ESPN waste my time this is much more productive I actually care about more about it be this hurt so it's a whole different thing. let's keep talking and whatever is whatever you know thank you for that this next question has to do with the frequent challenge regarding parent involvement and the importance of having parent and Community Boise in community schools of whether or not the quantity or the quality and I'm quoting from the question as far as a parent involvement regarding the numbers and feedback how important is diet and also do you have some strategies to help schools be more successful in getting parents involved in this process really doing this work have a better idea about how to do that but I think it's absolutely essential I think that the parental voice ownership involvement working I want to make this clear with the teachers the principles a crucial not on their own but working at part of the team that the school is absolutely essential I think the idea of having a listening on our way to community voice but having the implementation of those ideas as being a goal of the entire learning team which includes clearly they the teachers and the principal and the staff and I think that's absolutely essential and in fact it's trying also to find timoti's for the parents to be part of one thing when we have begun I'll work many years ago we had a lot of support for evening adult and weekend programs and there was even a book written about us by The Brookings my Brookings about this thing called School works and and it was England friends Germany Sweden and the work we were doing and we have not been as strong on that lol because of financial issues and wouldn't funds are coming from but I can tell you the community has been continuous not just emphasizes the need for adult programs at Community involvement so park the core is any involvement in the school this operation but also activities for adults in because we're unable to secure the resources volunteer program sprung up close community school night and went to Ghost and Stafford pain and Camille members run programs for that fellow community members and it's very very important so two sides of it one is their deep involvement which is most Central in the school's operation with the teachers with the principal under under the leadership of the school leadership but having genuine deep serious engagement of parents but also providing activities for parents and community members so the school is for the child but it's also clean them and I think that's very important and I can't you all probably know how better to do it on the ground and I do thank you for that. Thank you I'm you know I this is Spencer interesting thank you so much for this perspective you know sometimes I think with her you know we have a large immigrant community in and I feel like the school is where they are I feel comfortable going to bring your children to school and I myself I wasn't really involved in my community but when my children started school I was that was my that was the center of my community really we have to I think you're waiting for other people to do things and kind of I think we just have to make it make ourselves that engine of change and get those universities to help us because that's going to be what's going to change our community at the end of the day it's going to be Educational Institute we're going to do that and so so I just think the perspective is interesting and it kind of really made me start to think oh I'm waiting for this one to do this we're waiting for this one we just have to do it at and if we do so much in the center of the change is just it's Billy is where we need to be so so thank you for that person and I'm also I went to Temple University of Philadelphia and one more thing I'm at Christiana if you could just recognized on hello Sambrano some question please there's a question in the chat I don't know if we if you noticed that I wanted to recognize that maybe she could just ask it go ahead and thank you so much thank you democratic shows are critical for building the well-being of community and having the the people in the community the parents the teacher the workers man women participate in what they do leave is a well-being is so to integrate into our society right now is so polarized that often people are afraid to speak out and to speak their piece and I just had a meeting with some students at Peter and they're afraid sometimes to speak is so how do we how do we build in and work towards a democratic institutions where people are afraid to speak doing these buildings local partnership so the common good creates the questions that encourage people to speak we need each other and me and Abel us to get behind some of that it also maybe on taking examples when there are idiot logically Reuben attacks from particularly from the right I was just reading a story about what's happening to libraries throughout the United States with Librarians are under such tremendous difficulties they bite showing a different way of proceeding raising questions about children's well-being family's well-being communities will be raising questions about how we partner together we can begin to change the turf that can change the the the the ground and emoji shoes in question and bring together people of difference and Goodwill around the river the important questions of our children the future democracy and the quality of life of everyone in the community that seems to me to be something to try there are certainly groups and individuals who will not join that work that they driven by other interests and they are going to be engaged in difficult tax and difficulties but I think that the most people in most cases of people of Good Will and an example of that but he spent in Pennsylvania and other states that was a turning back way from idiot logical attacks on teachers and schools by moms for Liberty and Pennsylvania was Ground Zero we were the most the district's New Philadelphia marked on that have a parents and Community came to Heather voted to change the school board and said we want the business of our children first and center and I think it's a supplement the commonalities do you mean, about our children that lives there Futures that participation and the Improvement of the quality of life of the community that we can bring together people who do have different perspective and make progress in very difficult times and it's not going to be easy but couldn't be more important and that's one reason Community Schools in University assistant Community Schools are so important cuz they do we've seen this in our work they bring together people with different perspectives work together thank you thank you for the very good question I appreciate it if the goal of community schooling is to learn through democracy should community school coordinator send directors view themselves as teachers and facilitate I said that process is a great question I certainly think that's one way to season the see them is helping to advance democracy to facilitating undemocratic work I think that the specifics of that good friends in that partnership with the leadership the instructional leadership of the school in the partners but I think and it's not respect to everyone seeing themselves as facilitators of community and democracy is a very good I don't know who thought of that question but it's a great question and I think it's something that we all can consider in the work we do together that we answered to a higher value that we really are answering to a high-value about democracy and community and I think that's it the way to think about thank U, next question has to do with support at the school or with the school district do you have anyone as far as a recommendation who would be our area or even through Zoom to assist in the process of be continued to build and grow I don't know why I'm not far from you and maybe it would be a lovely conversation to get together and to chat and to learn and the nutter center would be happy to be of assistance via zoom and we didn't come we even come out to California and that's the only University sis show me the schools with other activities were involved with including a lumps that we work with so I think the UCLA colleagues would be great and maybe become part of the University system Community Schools Network and work with all the University Partners in school partners that we work with so that would be my thought about it and it could start at home with the with Karen course in the UCLA team at the Mann school in Robert F Kennedy School to place of it again there are others through the University of Sioux City Community School Network it would be another way of my colleague who I don't think he's with us now cuz he has an early visit to spread the word work in Washington d.c. tomorrow with Cory Bowman UPenn. Edu because dark adaptation work and he loved he wakes up every morning thinking about who we can learn from and work with so Corey Feldman wasser the place and I'm amazing role as a School site would post if you write me we we are fortunate to have a evaluator who helps with this many of the evaluations have to evaluate the government programs if we receive funding from so number ones you have to make sure we have money the next year so we can have all of that but we also do evaluations and cycle of students on schools that the most impressive probably is Right spoke to about the performance at ropes in high school I was State standardized test but also more importantly on his performance overall student learning if you write me happy to get that to you to my colleagues who do that good work for us that we are thank you so much I'm just double-checking the Q one of the classes has to do with funding as far as supporting the commute schools that I can just share briefly that we have been funded through the Community Schools Grant and also we have some of the in kind funding through our El Cap as well so I can say I answered one question this evening is taken care of I'm just double-checking the cube server before we before we let you go okay and have a couple of cute. shocking question as far as I have to do with monitoring of the community schools program it's the last one that I see what is a recommended process I know that you'd previously spoke about data comparative data but as far as the monitoring frequency and and what you recommend is the best way to know how things are working I think that's a very good question and I I think that the the way to know is work together and be there and I'm be part of the process and not having evaluation be a Sword of Damocles hanging 222nd program evaluation working with the superintendent and the principals and the teachers and ongoing feedback of the work and I think the assessment is part of the ongoing work in the people of the best fuel for that of the people on the ground and universities often get caught in being evaluators and not partners and it is really important that we are not making those decisions alone we make them together they can use our expertise the  purposes and I've learned over the years that I would trust a teacher and a good principal and a good staff members sense of progress than anything else and you have to be part of that process and the either that you provide is to help have continuous Improvement and not to say it's working or failing you know things we started look promising didn't prove his promising and things didn't look so strong became stronger part of that was because it was leadership at the school level who had the understanding and foresight to know it was time to move forward or just trying something new so I think it's all in a partnership model and the frequency of assessment who's on the culture of the school the school leadership that community of the partners and universities have to be partners in evaluation but not the evaluator and I was once part of a grant many years ago and in another country it was wonderful until they brought in all these us evaluators and it fell apart because it limited the partnership it was a lovely people that value a is a good friend of mine so we all learn from that experience all
