Adult Transition Program

Here are basic information about the Adult Transition Program (ATP):

 

Participants: Students with disabilities, ages 18-22 who have graduated from high school. Students graduate from the program at 22 yrs.

 

Program Focus: The Adult Transition Program focuses on meeting the comprehensive needs of the young adults with disability to foster independence and increase their overall functional life skills. Specifically, the program areas:

 

1. Daily Living- Students are taught skills in everyday living such as meal preparation, house keeping, laundry, and hygiene. Students practice these skills within the classroom setting and at the Independent Living Lab.
2. Functional Academics- Students learn money skills,  time telling, reading food labels, completing job  application, general functional reading and math skills, using store advertisements, telling time, etc. 
3. Independent Living/Community Safety- Mobility training using public transportation, street crossing, shopping skills (grocery and department store shopping), recreational outings, etc.
4. Vocational Skills- ATP students have access to  vocational training and paid employment. Based on each student's vocational interests and skill level, ATP staff members provide training both within the school setting and at job locations in the community. A Job Coach provides on the job guidance and training to support students' vocational growth. 
5. Agency Linkage- Through the ATP program, students are connected with the San Gabriel Regional Center, Department of Rehabilitation, and other designated services the students need based on their IEPs.  These agencies participate in the students' IEP meetings.  Upon graduation from ATP, the agencies continue services for students for life. These include employment, living support and transportation. In addition, ATP staff also assist students with securing government issued identification cards, registration for transportation services (eg. ACCESS, Get About, and bus token).

 WorkAbility Information 

Initiated by the California Department of Education (CDE) in 1981, the WorkAbility 1 (WA1) program was  designed to provide work experience for youths with disabilities, from 16 to 22 years. In collaboration with the Department of Rehabilitation (DOR), the state issues grants to districts to provide paid employment opportunities for students with disabilities. These grants are issued under the WorkAbility and We Can Work programs.  In PUSD, students with IEPs who are 16 years and older can participate in this paid employment opportunity.
