Mascot Magic: How a Viral Raccoon Inspired a School-Wide Art Contest

Move over, Seattle—there is a new art exhibition in town! Inspired by the internet-famous raccoon with short spine syndrome named Jimothy, Vejar Elementary School’s PBIS team recently hosted a campus-wide Jimothy Art Contest. Because Vejar's proud school mascot is also the raccoon, students and staff immediately felt a special connection to the viral critter known for his uniquely round shape and resilient spirit.

The PBIS Committee aimed to promote school spirit, creativity, and positive community engagement. Students across all grade levels were encouraged to participate and utilized their creativity to design their absolute best "Jimothy" masterpieces. While every entry was incredible, three outstanding artists took home the top prizes, which included brand-new art supplies and a Jimothy shirt featuring the inspiring motto: "In a World Full of Ordinary, Be a Jimothy."

• 1st Place: Ava T. (6th Grader)
• 2nd Place: Xavier R. (3rd Grader)
• 3rd Place: Isaac R. (5th Grader)

All student entries are now proudly on display for everyone to see on Vejar's newly designated "Hall of Jimothy" wall! Just like how Jimothy stands out by being proudly unique, this contest reminded Vejar students how they can stand out every day by wearing their M.A.S.K. Their school acronym serves as a daily blueprint for a positive community: Make Good Decisions, Act Responsibly, Solve Problems, and Keep Calm and Lead On.

"Seeing the students channel their excitement into such incredible artwork was amazing," said the PBIS team coordinators. "It was a fantastic way to tie a fun pop-culture moment back to our own school pride and reinforce our daily M.A.S.K. values."

Congratulations to all of our talented student artists for making our school spirit shine brighter than ever!
