Lorbeer Students Strengthen Community Through Thousands of Service Hours

At Lorbeer Middle School, students have played a major role in service learning this year. Lorbeer students completed an impressive 3,040.60 community service hours, helping PUSD reach a total of more than 34,500 hours of service this year. Through the California Junior Scholarship Federation (CJSF), which promotes volunteerism while encouraging academic excellence within the community, students demonstrated leadership and a strong commitment to making a difference both on campus and beyond.

These Longhorns began by strengthening their own school environment. They organized snack sales to fund activities, supported Homework Club through peer tutoring, created posters and bracelets for events, and volunteered at major campus activities such as the Back-to-School Dance, Winter Formal, Open House, music performances, and the PTSO Clothing Drive. These efforts helped build school pride and encouraged more students to get involved in supporting one another.

Their service then expanded beyond campus. Students volunteered at beach cleanups, supported the Chalk Art Festival, caroled for seniors at Claremont Manor, and hosted booths at the 5K/10K Run, Pomona Art Walk, and Lunar New Year Celebration. They also partnered with neighboring schools for Trunk or Treat events and supported the Earth Day Celebration in Diamond Bar alongside 30 PUSD Seal of Service students, showing how service can connect schools and communities across PUSD.

In addition to volunteering at events, these Longhorns organized donation drives. They collected food and hygiene items for the Pomona Valley Food Bank, gathered soda tabs and created goodie bags for the Ronald McDonald House, assembled holiday gift bags for families in need, and collaborated with the INSAN Foundation through the Striving for Humanity initiative to extend their outreach even further.

Along the way, students earned more than 20 Realize the Dream Medals, and five students completed their Seal of Service, demonstrating the meaningful impact of their efforts. This year, students achieved their goal of connecting the district through community service by collaborating with more than 12 schools across PUSD.

This success was supported by many dedicated individuals across the district, including PUSD Service Award Coordinators Mr. Joe Shim and Mrs. Claudia Ruelas; Lorbeer California Junior Scholarship Federation advisors Mrs. Lashana Crutchfield and Mr. Vuthy Tim; administrators Mr. Aguirre, Mr. Williams, and Ms. Michelle; and student leaders Caleb Lee, president; Kaelyn Lam, vice president; Zoey Ching, secretary; and Nathan Asuncion, treasurer, whose teamwork helped turn ideas into action.

As the 2025–2026 service year comes to a close, the accomplishments at Lorbeer are proof that something bigger is happening across the Pomona Unified School District. Students are proving that service is contagious, that leadership can begin at any age, and that when schools work together, they can create a lasting positive impact throughout their communities.
