Pomona, CA – March 26, 2025 – The Pomona Unified School District proudly announces Matthew Maizel, a dedicated Special Education teacher at Diamond Ranch High School, has been named the 2025-26 Teacher of the Year.
Matthew Maizel is an exceptional educator whose dedication and compassion make him truly deserving of the Teacher of the Year award. With nearly 18 years of experience at Diamond Ranch High School as a moderate-severe special education teacher, he takes on one of the most challenging roles in education, working tirelessly to support students with diverse and complex needs. His patience, unwavering commitment, and deep sense of care create an environment where his students feel valued, understood, and empowered to reach their full potential. His ability to balance structure with kindness, challenge with encouragement, and expectations with empathy is a testament to his immense capacity as an educator. His ability to foster an inclusive and rigorous learning environment has made him a respected educator among students, parents, and colleagues. His passion for teaching and dedication to student success go beyond the classroom, making a lasting impact on the Diamond Ranch community.
Beyond his classroom responsibilities, Maizel has spearheaded the transformation of his senior class into a Career Technical Education (CTE) program, focusing on hospitality and the coffee industry. He is currently working toward his CTE certification to enhance this initiative, which will allow his students to collaborate with general education peers and gain hands-on experience in the field.
In addition to his teaching role, Maizel is deeply involved in the school community. He serves as Vice-Chair of the School Site Council, helping shape policies that improve student outcomes. His contributions to the Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) reflect his dedication to school improvement. Furthermore, he actively supports the school’s football team and participates in various volunteer activities.
